Introduction:
The Lumen Docklands Data Centre, a multi-tenant site, is undergoing a significant system upgrade to modernise and align with the latest standards across the portfolio. Tyrrell Systems was tasked with upgrading the legacy Tyrrell Communicator hardware, which was no longer supported, to a new Niagara-based solution that integrates seamlessly with the client’s existing critical infrastructure.
Challenge:
The main challenge was upgrading the complex integration of the existing DC & AC power systems, HVAC plant, CRAC units, final circuit monitoring, fire alarm systems, and various temperature and humidity monitoring sensors without disrupting the ongoing operations. Additionally, the upgrade had to retain as much existing hardware as possible to reduce costs.
Solution:
Tyrrell Systems designed a new solution using Tridium JACEs and Tyrrell Communicator LT2 devices, transferring all data and operations to the Niagara platform with minimal disruption. The upgrade incorporated a mix of open protocol and proprietary communication interfaces (RS232, RS485, and IP) while retaining the existing physical I/O and reusing the current wiring for new sensors. This approach allowed for a cost-effective upgrade while maintaining critical monitoring and alarm systems.
Systems Integration:
The upgraded system integrates the centre’s diverse monitoring components, with all alarms and monitoring points transferred to primary and secondary servers for visibility from the Network Operations Centre (NOC). This ensures seamless monitoring and control, improving operational efficiency.
Server Setup and 3D GUI:
All critical monitoring points were processed on the Niagara servers and formatted into XML for the NOC Alarm System. The solution also includes 3D visualisations of connected systems and the building layout, aiding in the operation and maintenance of the data centre with accurate hardware location mapping.
Data Synchronisation to External SQL:
Essential monitoring services were synchronised with an external SQL database for reporting purposes. Standardised naming conventions were applied across systems to ensure seamless data export and reporting, allowing the client to provide accurate, real-time reports to their customers.
Conclusion:
The Lumen Docklands Data Centre upgrade successfully modernised its infrastructure using a cost-effective approach that minimised disruption. Tyrrell Systems’ integration of Niagara and the reuse of existing components ensured efficient operations, improved monitoring, and enhanced reporting capabilities.
